Throughout the planning stages John and Helen Beattie’s Rippinvale Developments Ltd have been strongly focused on a development which not only supports sustainable living once completed but also embraces the ethos during the actual engineering stage itself. With a strong connection to the locality and proven commitment to environmental sustainability, the Beattie’s “Rippinvale Retreat” was the first business in the district to receive the prestigious Qualmark Gold Enviro award for responsible tourism.
During the engineering stage, very little organic waste will leave the site. All fill will be used further up the property, to reclaim and replant an area of wasteground and a good proportion of roading shingle will be screened from a small existing pond thus creating a larger water and wetland habitat for birdlife and reducing the need to transport materials over long distances to the site.
Carbon emissions are offset from an existing forestry plantation, use of materials already naturally on site, extensive new landscaping within the park and within the newly created wildlife habitats.
Of the protective covenants on each property 4 in particular support each householder to contribute towards the sustainable concept of the park.
1. For power reduction, each house will have a hot water solar collection system.
2. For irrigation during Hanmer’s dry summer months, each property will have an underground rain water collection tank.
3. To renew and create habitats for local wildlife and to maintain a sense of green open space and connectedness with the local environment, one third of all garden plantings are to be New Zealand native plants.
4. Boundaries will be planed with living fences, whilst maintaining individual privacy again this contributes to attractive green spaces and a feeling of inclusiveness within the neighbourhood itself.
